TOWNSHIP CRICKET FOR SURREY SIDE

March 2008

Claygate Cricket Club capped off an outstanding February ’08 tour the Eastern Cape, South Africa with a victory versus the Border Cricket Board XI at the test ground, Buffalo Park (pictured). Supporting cricket development in townships and schools, Claygate also managed to raise over £5,000 (R75,000) in partnership with the Donald Woods Foundation, which bought 57 cricket bats, and over 250 other pieces of cricket equipment, which were shared among the clubs and schools where the team played.

Of nine matches in total, moving receptions awaited the tourists with marching bands, singing, speeches and dancing at Masingata, Xesi and Mdantsane townships, with local boy, Makhaya Ntini turning up to support Claygate’s initiative in South Africa’s second largest township. Other matches included double headers against Hamiltons and Old Selbornians, as well as a last ball victory versus Bedford, at Lochardt Ainslie’s incredible Mill Cricket Ground (MCG), nestled in the Winterberg Mountains.

With a touring party of 48 – half of whom were players, Claygate won 4 and lost 5 matches – by far the most successful return from their seven international tours. Off-field activities included: Historical, political, community and heritage tours, game reserves, surf-school, dune-running, adrenalin speed-boating, rock-jumping, quad-biking, extreme wave-jumping, and some singing. The tour was an unbelievable experience for the team from Surrey and the receptions and warmth ("ubuntu") from the host clubs in the townships will be remembered for a long time to come.
