DWF takes up the challenge to develop schools<\/div>\r\n \r\n

Schools in the rural Eastern Cape are desperately under-resourced, in many cases lacking piped water, electricity, roofs, doors and furniture as well as \u00a0teaching materials. There are often\u00a0more than 60\u00a0pupils per class, due classroom shortages. Teachers usually live some distance from their school and the region\u2019s poor\u00a0roads sometimes prevent travel, so schools are often closed. In many cases, teaching practices need updating. In some areas, pupils are forced to drop out after primary school as\u00a0the nearest secondary school is hours away on foot.<\/p>\n[\/column]\n[column lg=”6″ md=”12″ sm=”12″ xs=”12″ ]\n

Local children have much else to contend with. Because of South Africa\u2019s high levels of HIV infection, many pupils are carers for parents who are HIV positive, or are orphans, or are themselves HIV positive. Many children are heads of households. Also, there are high levels of gender-based violence and sexual crimes, particularly against the young. Yet, every day, despite all these challenges, tens of thousands of children walk many miles to school, some of them fording rivers to do so and many on an empty stomach.<\/p>\n[\/column]\n[\/row][\/vc_column_text] <\/div>\r\n [\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” parallax=”content-moving” parallax_image=”2551″ css=”.vc_custom_1459189314740{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;}”][vc_column]

Recognising that their education depends on a broader approach to their needs, our OVC workers help them to obtain social care grants, and foster placements, as well as looking to their health and therapeutic needs. These children benefit from stimulating play at OVC clinics, as well as help with their schoolwork from our team. The majority of the children on our OVC programme pass their exams, despite the challenges they face at home.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-money” title=”Invests in infrastructure” tab_id=”1459188732094-460b76f0-bc4e” add_icon=”true”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Our first priority is to invest in local teachers, but we are also helping schools with basic facilities such water tanks for rain-water harvesting.
