Maternal and child health

The majority of households in the Mbashe area are female-headed households.

This coupled with a poor community understanding of danger signs during pregnancy and inadequate antenatal (ANC) and post natal care (PNC) services makes our Maternal and Child Health interventions a crucial aspect of the Health in Every Hut (HiEH) programme.

For many mothers and their children in the rural Eastern Cape, the nearest health care is at a hospital a considerable distance away. With poor roads and inadequate public transport, those most in need of treatment are unlikely to be able to access even the most basic health care or life-saving immunisations.

[/column]
[column lg=”6″ md=”12″ sm=”12″ xs=”12″ ]

Mothers and their children in deep rural areas face some of the most difficult challenges. Many live in families where nobody has a job, and most live below subsistence level far away from clinics and social services. Malnutrition is widespread with many children experiencing hunger, surviving on one meal a day.

With 20% of adults HIV positive, tens of thousands of children have lost one or both parents to an AIDS-related illness and have suffered the trauma of witnessing their loved ones die. Many – even the very young – are now the sole carers for a sick parent or younger siblings.

[/column]
[/row][/vc_column_text]

[vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

Our health teams are trained to consider the needs of the whole family when somebody tests positive for HIV or other serious illness. We also find vulnerable children through our Schools Programme and other initiatives. Thousands of children have been identified as in need of support and are now receiving help.

When a child is referred to our OVC team, our approach is to make a full assessment of need, considering every aspect of care – from financial support, to education, to health and emotional needs.
