The Donald Woods Foundation has entered into a groundbreaking partnership with Dementia SA to bring care and support to dementia sufferers and their families in our areas of operation.

DWF Community Health Outreach Workers (Chows) are being trained by Dementia SA staff to accurately and sensitively identify people suffering from dementia.

Those identified as suffering from the condition are referred to hospital for medical care. They also receive follow-up care from DWF’s embedded Chows, in collaboration with their families and the wider community.

DWF’s partnership with Dementia SA is an extension of the Foundation’s goal of identifying health needs in the most marginalised rural pockets of the Eastern Cape, and facilitating care and support for those found to be vulnerable or at-risk.

“The Donald Woods Foundation is committed to putting the most distant, abandoned, unsupported person living furthest from the clinic, down by the river, hours walk to the road – first,” says DWF CEO Dillon Woods.

“Our partnership with Dementia SA is an extension of this commitment. From the moment dementia sufferers are visited and screened, they are valued and ‘live’. They are known, cannot be forgotten or left and are brought into the care network.”
